Events

  • Invocation at the Plaza of St. Louis was by Rev. Dr. Frank Gunsaulus.
  • Large ceremony, speeches. Noontime telegraph signal from Roosevelt in White House signals the opening. [1]
  • President Roosevelt opens the Fair via telegraph from the White House. [2]
  • John Philip Sousa's band and a chorus of 450 played "Star Spangled Banner" and "Hymn of the West", the Fair's official hymn.
  • Secretary of War William H. Taft was the last and keynote speaker and represented the U.S. Government.
  • The opening day parade was four miles long and included 20 marching bands.
  • At exactly 7:30 pm the decorative and utility lighting on the Fairgrounds all came to life and power and lighting to the Pike's concessions and exhibits surged with life.
