Events

  • American Boy Day (free magazine, featured speakers in Festival Hall).
  • Democratic Convention delegates attend Fair.
  • Fire destroys American Restaurant in Jerusalem.
    • A fire broke out shortly before 2am in the American Restaurant in the Jerusalem concession. Two guards, Abd-el-Nour and Ellas Trad, noticed flames coming from the first floor windows and fired their revolvers into the air until empty, then triggered a fire alarm. The shooting roused the sleeping residents from their beds, and alerted the Jefferson Guard. One guard attempted to extinguish the flames with the emergency hose, but was unable to make any headway. As the flames continued to spread, upper story residents packed their items in trunks and threw them out the window, followed by themselves. One resident of the concession, Wadic Shachity, was rushing from his room to assist with the fire, and was hit in the head by a falling trunk as he passed the Central Hotel. He was sent, unconscious, to the Emergency Hospital with serious injuries. Upon arriving at the scene, the fire wagon was found too large to fit through the gates of the enclosure, and were forced to unload 700 feet of hose and drag it to the fire. The delay resulted in the building being completely engulfed, and a total loss, estimated at $18,000 ($542,867 in 2021)[1]. The cause of the fire is unknown, but the night watchmen described the fire as having started in the kitchen. [2]
