- Opening Day.
* Invocation at the Plaza of St. Louis was by Rev. Dr. Frank Gunsaulus. * Large ceremony, speeches. Noontime telegraph signal from Roosevelt in White House signals the opening. (9) PIC> President Roosevelt opens the Fair via telegraph from the White House. (2) PIC> John Philip Sousa's band and a chorus of 450 played "Star Spangled Banner" and "Hymn of the West", the Fair's official hymn. * Secretary of War William H. Taft was the last and keynote speaker and represented the U.S. Government. PIX> The opening day parade was four miles long and included 20 marching bands. * At exactly 7:30 pm the decorative and utility lighting on the Fairgrounds all came to life and power and lighting to the Pike's concessions and exhibits surged with life. * 187,793 attended the Fair's first day.
